The windows that close
Some things are cheap early and expensive later. The primary socialisation window runs from roughly three to sixteen weeks, and during it a puppy accepts new experiences as normal. After it closes, novelty is evaluated with suspicion instead.
Use that window deliberately. Different floor surfaces, stairs, car rides, umbrellas, men in hats, children at a distance, vet clinic visits where nothing happens, and the sound of a lawnmower. Quality over quantity, and always at a distance the puppy can handle. Flooding a young dog creates the fear you were trying to prevent.
Crate work comes first, and in Louisiana it is not optional
A crate trained dog travels calmly, settles in unfamiliar places, and recovers from disruption. Anywhere else that is convenient. On the Gulf Coast it is preparation.
Evacuation is the reason. Pet friendly lodging expects a crated dog, shelters require it, and a frightened 85 pound animal that has never been confined is a genuine emergency during the worst week of your year. Build the habit in month one, when it costs you nothing.
The four behaviours that carry everything else
Recall. Come, reliably, first time, under distraction. Build it on a long line for months before you trust it off one. Never call a dog to punish it, because you only get to do that once.
Load. Into the vehicle on command. Pair this with recall as the two behaviours that matter most in an evacuation, and practise it when nothing is happening.
Place. Go to a mat and stay there until released. This is the behaviour that makes a high drive dog liveable indoors, because it gives the dog a job during dinner, guests, and deliveries.
Loose lead. An eighty five pound dog that pulls is a dog that stops getting walked, and a dog that stops getting walked becomes the problem people describe when they rehome a shepherd.
Adolescence, where most owners quit
Around six months the drive comes online and the biddable puppy starts making independent decisions. This is not regression and it is not defiance. It is the dog becoming what it was bred to be, on schedule.
Expect testing between six and eighteen months. Hold the rules, keep the exercise up, and keep training through it rather than waiting it out. Owners who coast through adolescence are the ones describing an uncontrollable two year old, and the two year old is simply the six month old that nobody kept working with.
Sport, and where to find it here
For a working line dog, a sport gives structure that pet obedience does not. IGP combines tracking, obedience, and protection under a judge. Scent work, rally, and dock diving all suit the breed and are gentler entry points.
Louisiana clubs cluster around the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette areas. Northwest and northeast Louisiana handlers often travel toward Texas or Mississippi for regular club work, so be honest about whether you will make that drive before you buy a dog that needs it.

Training questions
When should training actually start?
The day the puppy comes home, at eight to ten weeks. Not formal obedience, but name response, handling, crate comfort, and controlled exposure to new surfaces, sounds, and people. The primary socialisation window closes around sixteen weeks and what you miss inside it is expensive to rebuild later.
How much time does this take each day?
Less than people fear, spread more often than they expect. Three to five short sessions of five to ten minutes beats one long one, because a puppy attention span is genuinely tiny. Add the daily physical exercise on top: 60 to 90 minutes for an adult, scaled down while joints are still growing.
Can I train in Louisiana summer?
Yes, on a night schedule. From May through September work before 7am and after 8pm, and move the mental work indoors in air conditioning during the day. Scent games, place training, and impulse control all work fine on a kitchen floor, and fifteen minutes of that tires a dog more than a mile of walking.
Do I need a professional trainer?
You need one for protection work and you benefit from one for everything else. What matters more is consistency between sessions. A weekly class you actually attend and practise between beats an expensive board and train that ends with a dog trained for someone else house.
What if my dog is already a year old and untrained?
Start now. Adolescents are harder than puppies and entirely trainable. Expect the first few weeks to feel like arguing, because you are renegotiating rules the dog wrote for itself. The order stays the same: management first, then the four core behaviours, then everything else.
