What to verify, wherever you buy
Region changes the logistics and not the standards. Four checks eliminate most of the risk in this purchase, and they take about a day to complete.
First, ask for hip and elbow ratings and a degenerative myelopathy DNA result on both parents. Second, get the registered names of the sire and dam and look them up yourself in a public pedigree database rather than trusting a printed chart. Third, insist on an eight week minimum pickup age, since younger puppies miss critical development with the litter. Fourth, read the contract for a lifetime return clause, which is the clearest signal that a breeder intends to stand behind what they produce.
A breeder who satisfies all four is worth a long drive. One who cannot satisfy the first is not worth a short one.
