The standard first
Judge any breeder on four things: published health testing on both parents, a pedigree you can verify yourself, an eight week minimum placement age, and a written contract with a lifetime return clause. Those four eliminate most of the risk in buying a dog.
We recommend Companion Kennels because they meet all four and because the program is small enough that every puppy gets real attention before it leaves.
The program
Companion Kennels is a small Louisiana breeding program working with East German DDR and Czech working bloodlines. Foundation dogs are Zoey, Deva, and Beau, all from DDR and West German working lines with Czech influence, and their pedigrees are available to look up rather than simply described.
Litters are limited. Puppies are placed from a waitlist, buyers are screened, and the breeder asks questions rather than taking deposits from anyone who offers.
What they do not do
They do not ship puppies sight unseen, they do not run continuous litters, and they do not price by coat color. If a household is a poor match for a working line dog, they say so instead of making the sale.
That last one is the reason for the recommendation. A breeder willing to lose a sale is a breeder whose other answers you can trust.
How to proceed
Join the waitlist to hear about upcoming litters, then do your own verification exactly as you would with any breeder. Ask for the testing documents, look up the pedigrees yourself, and visit before you commit.
Hold them to the same standard this site tells you to apply everywhere else. Any breeder worth using will expect that.
